Stumpergasse

Ronald Lenz en Daniela Krautsack spraken tijdens de bijeenkomst Nederlandwortdanders/Live #1 Internationaal op 10 april in Den Haag over 'Stumpergasse, a hyper-local entrepreneurs community.'

"We believe that cities should help build citizen engagement ‘infrastructures’ that are interwoven with and supported by the architecture of the built environment. Infrastructures that promote social connectedness, collaboration, entrepreneurship and shared governance. Architecture in the 21st century is not just about building buildings anymore. It’s about building networks.

At the heart of this question we see the skill sets and talents of local professionals as the main catalyst. How to create a community with the right incentives that taps into this often hidden knowledge and expertise and transforms it into a sustainable setup is the central design challenge. Motivational factors to participate include personal representation, new connections, possibility learning & advising, being part of a clear actionable program with short and long term results and potential for new opportunities.

A mid-sized street in downtown Vienna, called Stumpergasse, and an office site of roughly 100 entrepreneurs was selected. A street that connects two city districts and consisting of an eclectic mix of residents living there. The creative industries is heavily represented (advertising agencies, photographers, various film production companies, artist management companies, architects, urban planners, designers, musicians, etc), then consultants (management consultants, real estate consultants), Vienna's most renowned 'model agency', and all sorts of small companies trading goods & services.

It poses as the archetypical city street that does not have the social places that inspires people to meet and connect easily. A core focus of the initiative lies in determining the identity of the street and potentially new ways of expressing entrepreneurial collaborations that might arise. The long term goal is to see how the lesson learned can be implemented in other parts of Vienna.

Opdrachtgever
Vienna’s Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer Wien – WKW). WKW has the explicit task of supporting entrepreneurship in Vienna and has done so for decades with successful but mostly traditional programs. An important future strategy for WKW is to map, harness and support - hidden - entrepreneurial potential in Vienna.
WKW’s objective is to find out how hyperlocal communities can create a value chain in order to vitalize the local economy and at the same time empower entrepreneurs in neighborhoods to co-create and co-design their public space. WKW has one goal with this project: to create an identity for the neighborhood and a new entrepreneurial awareness of their business location through networking and collaborations within the entrepreneurs community.

Financiering
WKW is funding the project. Further funding agencies connected to the city of Vienna will support throughout the 3-year-period. Crowdfunding will be organized within the community to guarantee community motivation and interaction.

Beslissende factor
The initiative reframed the question: Which factors make a hyperlocal community work?
The answer lied in fostering hyperlocal entrepreneurial networking, not on eye-level zones and aimed at increasing frequency for the shop community. The project solely focuses on entrepreneurs located above eye-level, i.e. floor 1 and above.

Based on a three year program, substantially funded by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and driven by a board of motivated entrepreneurs, the mix of offline and online activities and the creation of a digital community merge with urban interventions and hyper-local design innovations. The value was seen in establishing a knowledge database that connects smart citizens based on the expertise and wisdom of the entrepreneurs – an approach that had not been used before.

Vernieuwend
Innovative for Vienna : a) Connect entrepreneurs that are located above eye-level zones and b) connect entrepreneurs based on their expertise and wisdom. The design and development of the network is done through co-creation sessions with the entrepreneurs, based primarily on gamification mechanics - clear goals, rules, voluntary participation and feedback loops - help provide intrinsic and therefore priceless motivation to participate, co-create and share.

Ontwerp
The design engages the community to commonly share. We are on site to motivate, observe and supervise and subsequently guide the vision process to scale the initiative.

Drijfveer en ambitie
The motivation to expedite social cohesion in cities. Our ambition is to build a city-wide community network of smart citizens that participate in co-designing their future, supported by professionals that benefit from the value chain."
